Back in 2011 West 49 embarked on an ambitious journey across Canada teaching children the basics of skateboarding and skateboard safety. The event went so well that they have now received the Retail Council Of Canada’s award for Corporate & Social Responsibility. Press Release Below.
(June 6, 2012) West 49 is very pleased to announce that we were honored earlier this week with the prestigious Retail Council of Canada’s Award for Corporate & Social Responsibility. The award was handed out during the annual Excellence in Retailing Awards Dinner on Monday night in Toronto where the West 49 LRN2SK8 presented by DisneyXD program was recognized as the award winning retailer- initiated program for 2012.
The Corporate & Social Responsibility Award recognizes a retailer-initiated program that demonstrates a creative response, active collaboration and successful fulfillment of community needs. It honors a retailer that has committed corporate support to social causes and engagement in the community.
“We are so honored to receive this incredible award that shows our commitment to authentically build community with our loyal customers. West 49 wanted to go beyond selling skate gear to kids by creating an environment where they can get physically active and experience skateboarding in a safe environment, “ according to Cindy Mielke, Director, Marketing, West 49 Inc. “I would especially like to thank all the West 49 store staff that really made this tour a success by getting kids excited about enrolling for the lessons, and coming out to volunteer their time as instructors. We could not have done this tour without them”
West 49 LRN2SK8 presented by DisneyXD (www.west49LRN2SK8.com) is a national annual tour that, in its inaugural year of 2011, made 31 stops from coast to coast in mall parking lots and nearby community centres. The LRN2SK8 program is free to beginner skaters age 5 and up and offers kids a chance to familiarize themselves with safe skateboarding in a fully enclosed mobile skate park that includes a street course and Element drop spot obstacles. The program provided all equipment and safety gear. Seasoned riders including West 49 store staff provided lessons. Each class ended with a graduation ceremony where the new skater received a certificate for participating and completing the program.
DisneyXD was the perfect partner providing a great experience onsite and contributing immensely to the tour’s promotion through TV and website coverage. Other sponsors were able to sample their products in our West 49 stores nationally.
West 49 is excited to continue the program in 2012 with even more stops across Canada. Check www.west49LRNSK8.com for the full schedule.
West 49 would especially like to thank eventSing, the production company that worked with West 49 to build and execute the event, presenting sponsor Disney XD, all the shopping mall locations that provided the space and all the other sponsors that donated their time and resources.
